Partnership between IAMI and Children’s Mercy Hospital combines drug development and clinical pharmacology expertise

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (August 31, 2011) – Making new and repurposed drugs available for children with cancer is one of the goals of a collaboration between The University of Kansas Cancer Center’s Institute for Advancing Medical Innovation (IAMI) and Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics.

Researchers from IAMI and Children’s Mercy are working together to reformulate and test a drug for pediatric patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

In the first of what both organizations predict will be many projects, researchers from IAMI and Children’s Mercy are working together to reformulate and test a drug for pediatric patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The drug, currently only available in pill form for adults, is being redeveloped into a liquid that can be given safely to children.

"Because there is no liquid version of this drug on the market, parents of children with ALL have to crush the pills and hope they are giving their child the correct dosage," said Scott Weir, PhD, PharmD, director of IAMI and program leader for the cancer center’s Drug Discovery, Delivery and Experimental Therapeutics Program. "Giving the wrong dosage can be toxic; not giving enough could result in the leukemia returning – it is terrifying for a parent."

The combination of IAMI’s expertise in drug formulation and Children’s Mercy’s reputation as a national leader in pediatric clinical pharmacology and pediatric oncology provided the foundation for bringing this formulation to pediatric patients. The drug will be formulated at IAMI and a Phase I clinical trial for the drug opened this past month at Children’s Mercy.

"The relationship between our two organizations is special because we each bring something to the table," said Dr. Neville. "Together, we can accomplish what no one else in the country is doing."
