Lung cancer forms in the tissue of the lung – usually in the cells that line the airways. It can invade nearby tissues and form tumors. Lung cancer can start anywhere in the lungs and affect any part of the respiratory system. The cancer can spread, or metastasize, to the lymph nodes and other parts of the body. The two main types of lung cancer are small-cell and non-small-cell.

The National Cancer Institute expects to see more than 222,000 new cases of lung cancer in 2010 and more than 157,000 deaths. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths.
