Uterine cancer is the growth of abnormal cells in the lining of the uterus. The lining is called the endometrium. This cancer also is called endometrial cancer. It is the most common gynecologic cancer. It is the fourth most common cancer in women in the United States.

The number of cases of uterine cancer is increasing. It usually strikes women over age 50. It is more common among white women than African American women. But mortality (the incidence of death) is higher among African American women.

Uterine cancer usually can be cured when it’s found early. Most of the time this cancer is found in its earliest stage, before it has spread outside the uterus. The uterus is located in the pelvis. It is where the fetus grows during pregnancy.

When cancer cells grow in the uterus, they can spread and invade neighboring organs. They can also break away and spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream or the lymphatic system.

There are other types of cancer that affect the uterus. One is called uterine sarcoma. It affects the muscle of the uterus. Uterine sarcoma is treated differently than endometrial cancer. Most uterine cancers are endometrial cancers. The information in this section addresses only endometrial cancer.
