Sarcomas are cancers of the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels or other connective or supportive tissue. Sarcomas make up about 1 percent of all cancers in adults and 7 percent of cancers in children.
Types of Sarcomas
- Bone sarcomas
- Ewing sarcoma
- Malignant giant cell tumor
- Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) and bone
- Soft-tissue sarcomas
These cancers develop from soft tissues like fat, muscle, nerves, fibrous tissues, blood vessels or deep skin tissues.
- Epithelioid sarcoma
- Malignant fibrous histiocytoma
- Malignant mesenchymoma, malignant schwannoma (malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor)
- Synovial sarcoma
These cancers vary widely, from benign tumors that can be cured by surgery to highly malignant cancers that need to be treated with multiple therapies. Treatments include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. The vast majority of these tumors are treated in a limb preservation fashion, allowing patients to be functionally active throughout their lives.
