Cardio-Oncology Clinic

Together with Mid-America Cardiology, our Cardio-Oncology Clinic provides patients with an assessment of cardiac risk factors after breast cancer. You may be scheduled for this clinic if you have the following risk factors and no active symptoms:

Risk Factors

  • Anthracycline-based chemotherapy
  • Elevated cholesterol
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Herceptin chemotherapy
  • High-dose chemotherapy
  • History of left-chest-wall radiation
  • Hypertension
  • Overweight
  • Smoking history
  • Metabolic syndrome

During your first appointment, our cardiology staff will review your risk factors and consider options for preventing heart disease. We will schedule any necessary follow-up scans and care. Patients experiencing active symptoms should call Mid-America Cardiology immediately at 913.588.9700. We often make referrals to this clinic during Survivorship Routine Care clinics.

Patients who see doctors outside The University of Kansas Cancer Center are welcome to schedule appointments in this clinic. Patients should bring the following to their first visit:

  • Echocardiogram results
  • EKG results
  • Cardiac stress test results
  • Blood pressure readings (if done at home)
  • Labs done with outside primary care physician
  • Fasting lipid profile results (cholesterol testing)

For patients without three risk factors or personal history, risk assessments also are available through Mid-America Cardiology’s Risk Reduction Clinic.
