What are myelodysplastic syndromes?

The body's blood-forming cells are responsible for producing red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. In MDS, this process slows, leaving the body ill-equipped to pump oxygen throughout the body, fight infections and stop bleeding.

There are numerous types of MDS. Some forms are mild and treatable. Others are severe and dangerous. MDS has the potential to evolve into acute myeloid leukemia, a life-threatening blood cancer.
