Most advanced prostate cancer treatments

We have a nationally recognized, multidisciplinary team of prostate cancer subspecialists at The University of Kansas Cancer Center, the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, that focuses exclusively on prostate cancer. Because we offer comprehensive treatment options for prostate cancer, many of which are not available elsewhere in the region, each patient is matched with the most appropriate treatment to maximize the chance for success.

In addition to proton therapy, we offer the most advanced and comprehensive treatments in radiation oncology, including brachytherapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy and SpaceOAR™. We also offer many clinical trials for early-stage (I and II) and advanced and metastatic (stage III and IV) prostate cancer, and are at the forefront of clinical studies with immunotherapy and targeted therapy to treat prostate cancer.

Our prostate cancer team is the only one in the region offering Retzius-sparing radical prostatectomy. This minimally invasive robotic surgery allows us to remove the prostate in a less invasive way ̶ dramatically reducing recovery time and unwanted side effects. We are also the first and only proton center in the region to offer high-intensity focused ultrasound. This type of minimally invasive focal therapy uses the energy of sound waves to heat and destroy cancer cells in prostate tumors that have not spread. From the moment you call our cancer center, our specialized nurse navigator will assist you whether you are seeking a second opinion, exploring treatment options, navigating a referral or needing an appointment.

Advantages of proton therapy

Proton therapy is a highly specialized and technologically advanced form of radiation that targets tumors and spares surrounding healthy tissues by using a pencil-thin beam of protons to deliver radiation directly to the tumor. Not all proton equipment is the same. The University of Kansas Cancer Center’s Proton Therapy Center uses the most advanced technology from IBA, the world leader in proton therapy.

During treatment, protons enter the body at a low radiation dose. Proton therapy treatments are delivered on an outpatient basis, are noninvasive and painless. Most patients retain a high quality of life during and after treatments.

One of the greatest benefits of proton therapy is that it conforms to the shape of your tumor. This allows for more effective treatment and helps your surrounding organs and tissues avoid unnecessary radiation. It can be used in combination with traditional X-ray or photon radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery.
