Cancer Center Launches Clinical Trial Finder App

December 04, 2020

A new mobile application developed by The University of Kansas Cancer Center will make it easier for physicians to find clinical trial opportunities for their patients. According to Dinesh Pal Mudaranthakam, director of Research Information Technology, about 60% of clinical trial participants come from physician referrals.

“We wanted to provide physicians located in our catchment area with a platform that offers a comprehensive list of cancer clinical trials at their fingertips,” Mudaranthakam said.

Utilizing the mobile application, physicians can promptly identify and refer participants directly to the cancer center’s screening team. Participants may also access the tool to review curated study opportunities. The iOS application includes all open trials at KU Cancer Center and is updated daily with the latest details on new and existing trials.

Vinay Murakonda, software architect, worked closely with cancer center clinicians and clinical trial experts to create the app.

“It was an immense opportunity for me to interact with physicians, as well as our indispensable staff at the clinical trials office, to develop this app. We were thoughtful in ensuring all the needs of our stakeholders were met,” he said.

In addition to seamlessly delivering the latest clinical trials straight to your phone, the tool helps support broader efforts to advance cancer research, according to Tara Lin, MD, medical director of the cancer center’s Clinical Trials Office.

“In addition to helping each enrolled patient, it advances innovation in cancer therapy as we accrue more quickly to trials and learn the positive effects of these new treatments,” Dr. Lin said.

Other team members involved in the development include Raed Al-Rajabi, MD, Autumn Tribitt, Jecinta Scott, BJ Broome, Adam AlDouri, Goutham Marikanti, Hobs Apell, Byron Gajewski, PhD, Matthew Mayo, PhD, MBA, Roy Jensen, MD, members of the Clinical Trials Office and members of the Biostatistics and Informatics Shared Resource.
