February 07, 2023

Danny Welch, PhD, associate director for Education at The University of Kansas Cancer Center, has been awarded a $200,000 grant from METAvivor, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research for stage IV metastatic breast cancer. The grant will fund his work studying the connection between mitochondria and metastasis.

Since 2009, METAvivor has awarded 193 research grants totaling nearly $29 million. Dr. Welch is an active member of METAvivor and was awarded their first-ever research grant. This recent award is presented by a group that hosts The Pittsburgh Metsquerade, a fundraising event that supports metastatic breast cancer research, and in honor of members who died of metastatic breast cancer during event planning: Jill Griffin, Andrea Dimond, Lori Czyzewski and Sophia Holland.

“This grant from METAvivor will help us look more deeply into genetic disparities in breast cancer metastasis,” Dr. Welch said. “We really appreciate the foundation board for their willingness to fund research into this important topic.”
