About Me
Jennifer Gerton, PhD, is interested in the interplay between chromosome organization and preservation of genomic function. Her research program utilizes yeast and mammalian model systems and uses genomics, genetics, microscopy, molecular biology, and biochemistry to study processes that contribute to chromosome maintenance. Her group focuses on evolutionarily conserved proteins called structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) proteins and the large macromolecular complexes called kinetochores. Understanding both the defects in SMC regulated chromosome metabolism and the dynamics of kinteochores over the cell cycle may lead to better understanding human health conditions related to aging, cancer and development.
