(July 19, 2011) – The University of Kansas Hospital has been recognized nationally by U.S. News & World Report for providing excellent care in six key areas. It is the only Kansas City-area hospital and the only Kansas hospital to make any of the national “Best Hospital” lists for adult care.

The University of Kansas Hospital also received the magazine’s second consecutive ranking as the top hospital in the Kansas City metropolitan region.

In addition to the above national rankings, the U.S. News list also named six other specialty areas as “high performing” for a total of 12 recognized specialties:

It is the fifth consecutive year the heart and heart surgery program has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the revitalization of the heart program at The University of Kansas Hospital.

"It is remarkable the heart program has grown to be nationally recognized for its consistent excellence after only ten years of existence. It is a tribute to the vision that built the program, as well as the physicians, nurses and other health care providers who keep the focus on the patient every day," said Bob Page, president and chief executive officer of The University of Kansas Hospital.

In addition, Page noted the variety of programs honored by the magazine.

"The rankings show the depth and breadth of our programs," said Page. "It’s the third consecutive listing for Ear Nose & Throat, as well as for the Kidney program and the second straight for Pulmonology. All our programs made the list because of objective data about our outstanding outcomes for patients."

The national cancer ranking comes just two months before The University of Kansas Cancer Center submits its application for National Cancer Institute designation.

"We know our patient care for cancer is at a high level now, and it is gratifying to be nationally recognized for it. Our just completed merger with Kansas City Cancer Center and the emphasis on early phase clinical trials associated with our pursuit of NCI designation will push our program to even greater heights," noted Page.
