Topping Out Ceremony Marks Major Progress on New Cancer Center Building

On August 21, 2026, The University of Kansas Cancer Center celebrated a key milestone in the construction of its new cancer research and clinical building with a ceremonial topping out. The steel beam, signed by faculty, staff, patients, construction partners and community supporters, was raised into place as a symbol of progress and shared commitment. Several dignitaries were in attendance, including U.S. Senator Jerry Moran.

The new building will bring together laboratories, clinical spaces and a Good Manufacturing Practice cellular therapy manufacturing area under one roof. For the first time in the cancer center’s history, researchers and patient care teams will work side by side. The work inside the building will focus on cellular therapy, a leading‑edge approach that uses a person’s own cells to more directly target their cancer. The building will also house the cellular therapeutics GMP laboratory, which will help expedite CAR T treatment for patients. Construction is slated for completion in late 2027.

During the event, leaders spoke about the purpose behind the project and the impact the new building will have on patients, researchers and the region.

“Today is a milestone in the construction of these state-of-the-art cancer facilities and another step closer to expanding our ability to deliver the most advanced cancer care and conduct cutting-edge research,” said Jack Beal, cancer center senior vice president. “One day soon, there will be patients crossing their own milestones here in their cancer journey. We remain guided by our commitment to our patients and the recognition of what this building offers and represents: hope.”

The signed beam was installed in the shared collaboration space, representing the future of clinicians and researchers working together to accelerate discovery and improve care.

“Bringing our researchers, clinicians and cell therapy manufacturing capabilities together in one place changes how quickly ideas can move,” said Roy Jensen, MD, vice chancellor and director of the cancer center. “It lets us share knowledge in real time and turn promising discoveries into treatments with fewer barriers.”
