Empowering Patients with Personalized Guides

Taking part in your care

With a cancer diagnosis, patients and their loved ones are often at a loss, met with unfamiliar terms, numerous appointments and lots of information.

At the University of Kansas Cancer Center, we empower patients and encourage them to be proactive about their treatment. One way we accomplish this is by providing newly diagnosed patients with a set of personalized cancer appointment, treatment and survivorship guides. Through these informative guides, we help patients navigate their diagnosis, treatment and survivorship and give them a sense of control at a crucial time.

Personalized guides

The guides are created specifically for each patient – and no two are the same.  

The Patient Resource Appointment Guide provides patients with what they need to know and should expect prior to their first appointment. It allows patients to keep track of multiple appointment times, dates and locations in one convenient spot. It also includes photos of the medical team a patient will see, driving and parking instructions and resources for patients and families who come from outside Kansas City.

The Patient Resource Treatment Guide includes facts about a patient’s specific disease, stage of diagnosis and treatments they will receive. This helps reduce false or misleading information gleaned from other sources or the Internet. Letters from survivors with that particular disease offer inspiration and hope. Care team photos and biographies are included as well as a comprehensive list of advocacy and financial resources.

At the end of treatment, patients receive a Patient Resource Survivorship Guide. The survivorship guide assists patients in developing a survivorship care plan. It includes information about possible late effects, health and nutrition, returning to work and what to watch for to help identify signs of a possible recurrence or second cancer.

In creating the Patient Resource Guides, Uhlig uses those same tools to provide patients with a sense of power and control during an overwhelming time.
