What to expect after you refer a patient
We prioritize prompt communication and efficient collaboration with all referring physicians. Our staff and resources are always available to you.

Our experienced specialists are here to collaborate with you. To consult with a physician by phone, call 913-588-5862. A representative will collect basic information, then connect you with the appropriate physician. If a physician is unavailable, you may speak with a nurse. You can consult with a physician 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We treat patients with breast, lung, prostate, sarcoma, colon, and head and neck cancers, offering increased patient access to world-renowned experts and world-class care. We also offer the region's largest blood and marrow transplant program for the treatment of complex blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.
Nurse navigators: Guiding patients through cancer care
At The University of Kansas Cancer Center, cancer patients are never alone in their treatment experience. Our oncology-trained, disease-specific nurse navigators are experts in their field who support patients every step of the way – whether patients are facing proton therapy, gynecologic cancer treatment or a blood cancer diagnosis.
Nurse navigators also coordinate care with physicians and specialists – ensuring the physician care team promptly receives the records and results they need.
Our nurse navigators:
- Schedule necessary tests and appointments as quickly as possible
- Share medical records, paperwork and tests results with the physician care team
- Direct second opinions to ensure a streamlined process for referring physicians and patients
- Answer patients’ questions about their diagnosis and treatments
- Prepare patients for their 1st visit with the physician
- Identify and address barriers to patient care
- Offer education and emotional support to patients facing fear and uncertainty
