Genetic Testing Physician Resources

At University of Kansas Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, your patients will receive the gold standard of genetic counseling from counselors who are board-certified by the American Board of Genetic Certification.

Although we offer counseling for most types of inherited cancer, the majority of our work focuses on breast, colon and prostate cancer.

Counseling before genetic testing

It is essential that patients receive genetic counseling before any genetic testing. Genetic counseling helps patients learn which types of cancer they may be at risk to inherit. It also ensures they have informed consent if they choose to have genetic testing.

Our complimentary, in-person counseling sessions take about an hour. If your patients choose to have genetic testing, we help them navigate through insurance and select the best testing options. We select the lab that best suits each patient’s needs and requirements.

Genetic testing results

We receive each patient’s results and review and interpret them with the patient in our office. We also offer remote counseling and testing for patients who cannot travel.

When it's urgent

It usually takes about 4 weeks to get test results. If you and your patient are at a critical decision point in care, we can expedite testing and results.

Refer a patient

Your patients can self-refer or you can refer them to genetic counseling. If for any reason your patient cannot visit our office, simply request remote counseling. Call 913-588-5568.
