Cellular Therapy
Designed to improve your immune system’s ability to protect you against cancer, cellular therapies are evolving for a number of cancers, as well as noncancerous diseases. Most cellular therapies involve a process where samples of your existing blood are modified to attack cancer cells, and then those cells are injected back into your body.
What is cellular therapy?
Cellular therapy is an advanced form of treatment that uses your own immune system to help fight cancer. Described as living therapies, cellular therapies are a type of immunotherapy that can help some patients whose cancer has returned, stopped responding to treatment or requires a highly specialized approach.
Some cellular therapies are FDA-approved, while others are available through clinical trials. New cellular therapies continue to emerge through research and FDA approvals for a growing number of cancers and some noncancerous diseases.

Who can have cellular therapy?
Cellular therapies are advanced, first-in-the-world therapies and may be an option for people with certain blood cancers, including lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma, advanced melanoma and certain solid tumors such as synovial sarcoma. Currently, there are 7 FDA-approved CAR T-cell therapies. TIL therapy is approved for advanced melanoma. There are also 2 FDA-approved gene therapies available to treat sickle cell disease. More therapies will become available to the public as active and future clinical trials continue to progress.
How does cellular therapy work?
The premise of cellular therapy is to treat diseases using living cells. These living cells are collected from you or a donor. Some cell therapies work by replacing damaged cells while others redirect your cells to support your immune system.
